Shoes for the House: Every Step Shouldn’t Hurt

Sometimes kindness looks like a note of encouragement.
Sometimes it looks like a pair of shoes.

At a local Huddle House, servers spend 8–10 hours a day on their feet — often in worn-out shoes they can barely afford. One battles plantar fasciitis. Another wears five-dollar sneakers with holes. Every step hurts, yet they keep showing up with smiles and kindness.

I started out hoping to raise $1400 to buy one pair of supportive shoes. But after breakfast there this week, I realized something important: all of the feet serving others that morning needed better shoes.

So the goal has grown. I’m now raising $1,400 to re-shoe the entire serving staff — every foot in the house. I’ve gathered names and sizes and reached out to Shoes for Crews about a bulk discount. Every dollar helps bring comfort and dignity to the people who spend their days taking care of everyone else.

If you’re inspired to give $5 or $10 toward the goal, you can do so here:

Sometimes, the smallest act really is the most healing thing we do.

Doing My Part

Here’s how I contribute with every meal out: I only go if I have two five-dollar bills in my right-hand pocket and a note with an explanation.

The note says that someone put $5 toward their meal and another $5 toward a shoe fund for the servers. One bill goes to a server for a check; the other moves from my right-hand pocket to my left — from the contribution side to the fundraising side.

The note also invites the recipient to explore kindness and includes a link to this page. If they feel moved to help with this campaign (or the next one), I’ll be forever grateful. And if not, that’s okay too — I’ll just keep moving those five-dollar bills until every hardworking server at the Huddle House in Bedford, Virginia has new, solid shoes designed for restaurant workers.

More than anything, I hope people will begin to track their own kindnesses on the map above — and see how contagious kindness really is. 🌿
